HAIDONG GUMDO: History, philosophy, weapons – Everything about Haidong-Gumdo!

What is Haidong Gumdo?
Where & when did it start? Where can I learn Haidong-Gumdo?

Haidong Gumdo is a sword fighting method, which originated in Korea.

The swords used in Korean martial arts are identical to the Japanese sword – Katana.

The martial art of Haedong Gumdo was created in 1983. The techniques are mainly based on Japanese sword fighting methods (Iaido), while the Korean version added aspects that do not exist in modern Iaido such as: group training patterns and sparring/fights using sponge swords and wooden swords (bokken).

In this Korean martial art of “Sword Fighting Art” three types of swords are used during training (until reaching the level of black belt:
+ wooden sword (“bokken” in Japanese)
+ bamboo sword (“shinai” in Japanese)
+ blunt sword (blunt and not-sharp, imitation of A real katana sword – called “Iaito” in Japanese)

After a period of at least a year or two, and upon passing the black belt test, trainees move on to training with a real sword (with a sharp edge, cutting blade – called “Shinken” in Japanese).
